home construction

This is a traditional Acholi grass thatched hut.  The walls are made of bricks which are then covered with mud and cow dung. The homes have either dirt or concrete floors. Typically huts are built in the dry season because that is when the grass is available and also the construction is not hampered by rain. A well constructed roof can last as long as 30 years but most typically last around 10-15 years. The grass is woven very tightly and the huts are vitually water proof. The homes are very cool and can be at least 15 degrees cooler than the outdoor temperature. Toilets are usually in a separate areas. There is no plumbing so water must be fetched daily. Cooking is usually done outside on charcoal fires, but sometimesit is done inside the hut.
